Group asks FG to investigate Ikpeazu-Avengers connection.

Following claims by the militant group, Niger Delta Avengers NDA that the President Muhammadu Buhari-led administration is behind the political stalemate in Abia state, a pressure group, Abiazurumee Oganihu Abia, has lambasted the NDA, warning it to steer clear of issues regarding the state. It dismissed as ridiculous the position of the avengers that the federal government is plotting to install Dr. Uche Ogah as the governor of Abia as part of an elaborate plan to have him consequently defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC. The group expressed concern at the connection between the militant group and the embattled governor, Okezie Ikpeazu, urging the federal government to investigate the matter. Abiazurumee Oganihu Abia, described Ogah as a deeply committed member of the Peoples Democratic Party PDP who is unquestionably loyal to the party. It also condemned in strong terms the position of a section of Abia elders in Abia state and “an obviously partisan Ohaneze Igbo Youths for their negative comments on the Federal High Court ruling and the INEC issuance of a certificate of return to Dr Uche Ogah the rightful gubernatorial choice of every Abian as cowardly, and a support against the interest of an ordinary Abians”. ‎Chairman of the Abiazurumee Oganihu Abia‎, Okey Nwachukwu in a statement issued Wednesday in Abuja wondered why the “so-called Abia elders should pretend to be happy with the state of things in Abia where even primary school children are crying for help and calling for a change”. According to Mr. Nwachukwu, “the court judgment was simply an affirmation that God had heard the cries of Abians and had come to set Abia free and to redeem the state from those who have destroyed it.‎” The group also called on security agencies to investigate the connection between Dr. Ikpeazu and his latest spokespersons, the Niger Delta Avengers, “to unmask those sponsoring the group in its avowed terrorist plots to destabilize the Niger Delta and destroy the Nigerian economy. “Ikpeazu appears to enjoy the support and confidence of the terrorist organization that is so vehement in aiding his case by spreading false, fallacious and ridiculous propaganda.” The group decried the backwardness, stagnation, non payment of salaries, political patronage, insensitivity of the political elite and nepotism in Abia as patently legendary and such that called for a change. But yesterday the Niger Delta Avengers, refuted media reports that it opened a new Twitter accounts, @Real_Ndavengers and @NDAvengers1 where the allegation that the federal government is plotting to install Dr. Uche Ogah as the governor of Abia.

Federal government scraps CBT, pegs post-UTME fee at N2,500

The Federal Ministry of Education and other stakeholders in the tertiary education sub-sector have scrapped the Computer-Based Test, CBT, even as they agreed on N2,500 as the maximum fee for the post-Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.
This was contained in a statement issued in Abuja on Wednesday by the Secretary-General, Association of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities, AVCNU, Prof. Michael Faborode, who said the agreement was reached after a deliberation of officials of the ministry, federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education.
Faborode explained that while it was agreed that the post-UTME screening should be sustained following the scrapping of the Computer Based Test (CBT). “From the statement made by the Permanent Secretary, Dr Folashade Yemi-Esan at the meeting, there is no objection to screening by universities as long as it is not another CBT.
“She agreed that universities should advertise and the maximum fee that should be charged for the screening should be N2,500 – bank charges inclusive.’’
According to the statement, the association will formally convey its stance to the Minister of Education, Malam Adamu Adamu.
NAN reports that Adamu’s recent announcement of the ban on post-UTME had raised a lot anxiety among stakeholders.

Memo To Buhari: Take A Hard Look At Nigeria’s Map – Okey Ndibe

I recently surveyed President Muhammadu Buhari’s top appointments and was left wondering when last he took a long, hard look at Nigeria’s map. Before the president makes another important political appointment, he would do well to spend some time looking at the map of the country that’s under his charge.
This piece was written by Okey Ndibe. The views and opinions expressed here are those of the author and do not necessarily reflect the official policy or position of
letstalkng.blogspot.com
President Buhari’s disdain for geopolitical spread and religious diversity in his appointments is so stark as to constitute a scandal. As far as appointments go, it’s as if the man believes that Nigeria is reducible to one half of its geography, the North, and one major religion, Islam.
As a presidential candidate, Mr. Buhari was frequently characterised as a man given to excessive clannishness. Some critics alleged that his fealty to the northern half of Nigeria and partiality to fellow adherents of the Islamic faith trumped his belief in Nigeria and commitment to treat people of other faiths with fairness.
Since his presidential ambition aroused such anxiety, Mr. Buhari might have taken care to reassure Nigerians—as he stated in his inaugural speech—that he belonged to all of them. Instead, he seems to have gone out of his way to validate his critics’ worst fears. His personnel decisions as president have suggested a man whose mindset is as sectional as his political instincts are terrible. In one year as president, his appointments have deeply disappointed many Nigerians’ expectations of equity. He has operated as if unaware of the longstanding requirement that important political appointments ought to reflect the country’s federal character.
I believe every section of Nigeria has a pool of talented people. Therefore, the president’s default stance, choosing candidates for major positions from his own geographic area and religious group, is troubling. Is Mr. Buhari’s vision so blinkered that, each time he looks at Nigeria, he sees (mostly) Muslims and Northerners? And has he no handlers and advisers willing to speak honestly to him, to save him from his parochial instincts, to tell him, quite simply, that his appointments don’t tell a flattering story about him?
During Mr. Buhari’s first few months in office, some excused his lopsided appointments on the ground that he needed to surround himself with people he knew closely, whose loyalty he could count on. But even that apologia was untenable. Here was a man who ran for the Nigerian Presidency four times before he got elected. I don’t recall him professing that, if elected, he would fashion himself primarily into a Northern president. Surely, we should expect that a man who spent so much time and energy seeking to govern his country would have made some effort to broaden his base of loyalists.
Besides, a president never relies entirely—or even primarily—on his own wits when it comes to matters of appointment. He has his contacts within a party to draw from. He also has the apparatuses of the state to help him make judicious appointments. A man who runs a country—and one as complex as Nigeria—should not simply hand jobs only to people within his circle of familiarity.
Last week, several acquaintances emailed me a piece by Segun Odunuyi x-raying the sectional character of President Buhari’s appointments in the security sector. Mr. Odunuyi began by stating, “With the recent appointment of a new Inspector-General of Police, Nigeria’s entire security architecture took on a distinct sectional shape.” He then gave a breakdown of the heads of the various security departments, showing that virtually all of them were Northern Muslims. They include Defence Minister, Mansur Dan-Ali; the Director General of the Department of State Security, Mamman Daura; Chief of Army Staff, General Tukur Buratai; Chief of Air Staff, Abubakar Sadique; IG of Police, Ibrahim Idris; National Security Adviser, Babagana Monguno; Controller General of Immigration, Muhammed Babandede; Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, Abdullahi Gana Muhammadu; the Comptroller-General of Customs, Colonel Hameed Ibrahim Ali (rtd.); Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Prisons Service, Ahmed Ja’afaru; Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, Ibrahim Magu, and Minister of the Interior, General Abdulrahman Bello Dambazau (rtd.).
I’m willing to hazard that no previous Nigerian head of state, military or elected, ever had a record as clannish as the current president’s. As far as appointments go, he has utterly failed to demonstrate any broadness of spirit.
“Save for the Chief of Defence Staff (a Yoruba) and the Chief of Naval Staff (from Cross River), Nigeria’s entire defence structure with its command and control systems is controlled by one section of the country. Save for the Navy (whose operations, of course, are mainly coastal), Northern Muslims command every security organisation where men lawfully bear arms in Nigeria,” wrote Mr. Odunuyi.
Apparently, his piece has been widely circulated on the Internet. I must state that I identify with his deep concern.
Forget the question of whether these appointees are competent and above board. Even if the case could be made that they are a bunch of stellar performers, one can nevertheless raise the question: Are there no men and women from other parts of Nigeria and from different faiths who could have acquitted themselves well in these positions? Another question: Does President Buhari see Nigeria’s security machinery as the near-exclusive domain of Northerners and Muslims? Is it the case that he regards Nigerian Christians and those who hail from the country’s southern half as collectively disloyal, untrustworthy, even potential or real enemies of the state?
Nigeria is beset by numerous crises, including Islamist insurgency in the North-East, resurgent militancy in the Niger Delta, the agitation for Biafran secession in the South-East, and intermittent deadly attacks by Fulani herdsmen. The scale and spread of these crises demand a security team that is representative of the country’s ethno-religious diversity. I suspect that the sectional composition of President Buhari’s security team, the president’s initial hectoring response to militants in the Niger Delta, and the Nigerian state’s trigger-happy assaults on pro-Biafran agitators, have fertilised the perception that the Buhari Presidency was bent on an agenda of conquest.
A climate of mutual trust among Nigeria’s constituent ethnic units and religious groups is essential for repairing the country’s torn fabric. And that sense of trust is particularly shredded by President Buhari’s costly policy of looking inward, or Northward, any time he has an important appointment to make.
Apart from creating the impression that his vision of Nigeria is a deeply fractured one, President Buhari’s record of appointments has proved disastrous in other ways. Just last week, the Police Service Commission announced the retirement of 21 Assistant Inspectors General of Police, all of them senior to Mr. Idris, the president’s choice for acting IGP. Unless Mr. Buhari can demonstrate that the acting IG is something of a police genius and all the retired officers were deadwoods or worse, his decision to elevate Mr. Idris over many of his superiors has cost Nigeria the service and experience of too many officers who were not statutorily due for retirement. It’s called a waste of manpower.
It may be the case that the president is incapable of broadening his horizon when he has a job to fill. In that event, it behooves those closest to him—especially the Muslims and Northerners whose counsel he is likely to listen to—to point him to higher ideals of fairness. These advisers ought to alert the president to take a hard look at the map of Nigeria—especially its southern half—when next he must make a significant appointment.

Oscar Pistorius sentenced to 6 years in prison for murdering girlfriend

PRETORIA, South Africa — Oscar Pistorius, the double-amputee Olympian described by a judge as a "fallen hero," was sentenced on Wednesday to six years in a South African prison for the murder of girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, a ruling viewed by some as too lenient.
However, Judge Thokozile Masipa appeared to anticipate criticism of a jail term that fell far short of the normally mandated 15 years for murder under South African law, declaring: "Our courts are courts of law, not courts of public opinion."
Pistorius, who shot Steenkamp through the door of a toilet cubicle in his home in 2013, was asked to stand and face Masipa as she announced his sentence in a wood-paneled courtroom in the South African capital, Pretoria. He was calm after the ruling, embracing his aunt and tearful sister before being led down a courtroom staircase to a holding cell ahead of being taken to prison.
Later, a convoy of police cars with lights flashing and sirens wailing left a side entrance of the courthouse. In the convoy was a van with tinted windows, possibly carrying Pistorius.
The sentencing was the latest act of a three-and-a-half year legal drama that has often played out on live television and shown the fall from grace of a runner once viewed as an inspiration to many for overcoming his disability. Both of Pistorius' legs were amputated below the knees when he was 11 months old because of a congenital defect.
He made history by competing at the 2012 Olympics on his carbon-fiber running blades, and was one of the world's most recognizable athletes.
"He's a fallen hero, he has lost his career and he is ruined financially," said Masipa, who originally convicted Pistorius of manslaughter, a ruling that was overturned by an appeals court that instead convicted him of murder and sent the case back to her for sentencing.
In explaining the sentence, Masipa said there are "substantial and compelling circumstances" to show leniency toward Pistorius because he is a "good candidate for rehabilitation," is unlikely to commit another crime and had shown what appeared to be genuine remorse over Steenkamp's death.
Pistorius, 29, maintained he killed Steenkamp, a 29-year-old model and reality TV star, by mistake thinking she was an intruder hiding in the bathroom early on Valentine's Day 2013. Prosecutors alleged that he killed her intentionally after the couple argued.
Part of the difficulty for the judge in determining an appropriate sentence was that the Supreme Court convicted Pistorius of murder with "indirect intent." Pistorius was found guilty because he knew someone might die — even an intruder — when he shot. As Masipa noted, the Supreme Court did not find that Pistorius knew he was firing at Steenkamp.
Pistorius will be eligible to apply for parole after three years, according to legal experts. Prosecutors, who had asked that he be sentenced to 15 years in prison, can appeal for a heavier sentence but have yet to comment on whether they will do so.
"The family accepts the judgment," Anneliese Burgess, a spokeswoman for the Pistorius family, said outside the courthouse.
The Steenkamp family did not criticize the sentence. "The family has said it before they wanted the law to run its course. It has done so. No further comment. They will keep a dignified silence," said Dup de Bruyn, the Steenkamp family representative.
Legal expert Marius du Toit described the sentence as "lenient but not wrong."
Some people who gathered outside the courthouse were critical.
"The law didn't take its course," said Dukes Masanabo, a South African sports official who had hoped Pistorius would be sentenced to 10 to 12 years, not six.
He said the sentence is too light because Pistorius was sentenced to almost the same sentence — five years — for his earlier manslaughter conviction. He served one year of that sentence before being placed under house arrest at his uncle's mansion in Pretoria, and he had some freedom of movement outside the home during certain hours.
The time that Pistorius already served in prison is not subtracted from his new sentence, which may have contributed to the judge's relatively lenient decision, say legal experts.
Another South African, Sarah Maete, said she wanted Pistorius to get the full 15 years in prison for murder.
"It's not enough," she said.
In delivering her sentence, Masipa referred to the difficulties she faced in deciding a sentence that "satisfies every relevant interest" in a case that captured the world's attention and led to extremes of opinion over the celebrated athlete. She noted that Pistorius had fired four times — not once — through the closed toilet door and spoke of the devastating effect the crime had on Steenkamp's family.
Ultimately, "mitigating circumstances outweigh the aggravating factors," the judge said.
Steenkamp's parents, Barry and June, were present in the courtroom, which was packed with relatives of both Pistorius and Steenkamp, journalists and other observers.
Pistorius' defense lawyers had asked for no jail time at all, saying he should be allowed to do charity work with children.
Ulrich Roux, a South African lawyer and commentator who is not involved in the Pistorius case, said it had opened a window for South Africans into how their justice system works, including cross-examination and how a judge reaches a decision.
He said: "It's been a huge learning curve for our society."

Hillary Clinton trashes Donald Trump's business record in Atlantic City, Chris Christie

Hillary Clinton used the backdrop of Atlantic City, New Jersey, on Wednesday to slam Donald Trump and one of his most high-profile surrogates, the state's governor, Chris Christie.
"If your governor will start doing his job instead of following Donald Trump around, holding his coat, maybe we could really get New Jersey's economy moving again," Clinton said to cheers from the crowd.
Clinton is spending time in the city where Trump developed casinos in an effort to highlight what her aides are calling Trump's "fraudulent business history."
The visit comes the same day that the campaign announced that she is updating her college affordability plan to include input she received from her primary rival Bernie Sanders. In an olive branch to unify her party in fighting Trump, Clinton will add three new features to her "New College Compact," including eliminating college tuition for working families, a step that moves Clinton closer to the tuition free college plan that Sanders ran on in 2015 and 2016.
She hit Trump for "multiple bankruptcies, stiffing contractors and spurring hundreds of job losses" during his time owning casinos in Atlantic City.
Clinton appeared in front of Boardwalk Hall, the city's old convention center, and was introduced by a small business owner who the aide said was hurt by Trump's business practices.
Clinton and her aides are looking to move past an FBI press conference that recommended she not face charges in her exclusive use of a private email server, but also raised serious questions about her judgment. The presser by FBI director James Comey rocked Clinton's Brooklyn headquarters, making it even more important in the eyes of Clinton's top aides to undercut Trump's credibility.
Trump wasn't letting the spotlight disappear off the FBI press conference Wednesday morning.
"Crooked Hillary Clinton lied to the FBI and to the people of our country. She is sooooo guilty. But watch, her time will come!"
He also sent a pair of tweets criticizing Clinton and blaming Democrats for making "all the wrong moves" to destroy the city.
"I made a lot of money in Atlantic City and left 7 years ago, great timing (as all know). Pols made big mistakes, now many bankruptcies,"
Clinton, since pivoting to Trump, has attempted to undercut that business record, something that has animated much of his unexpectedly strong presidential run.
"How can anybody lose money running a casino? Really," Clinton jokingly asked an audience in Detroit last month.
She added, "Trump economics is a recipe for lower wages, fewer jobs, more debt. He could bankrupt America like he's bankrupted his companies."
Trump has filed four business bankruptcies in the last 30 years, all of which surrounded his casino holdings in Atlantic City.
Trump filed for bankruptcy on the Taj Mahal in 1991 and the Trump Castle Associates in 1992. He later filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy on Trump Hotel & Casino Resorts in 2004 and Trump Entertainment Resorts in 2009.
Trump has defended the bankruptcies by noting that he never personally went bankrupt.
"I have used the laws of this country ... the (bankruptcy) chapter laws, to do a great job for my company, for myself, for my employees, for my family," he said last year.
But the bankruptcies have hurt Atlantic City, a city that is now blighted with empty hulking buildings, unemployment substantially higher than the national average, and a high violent crime rate.
The Clinton campaign blamed Trump for the problems plaguing the city.
In addition to Wednesday's event, the Clinton campaign  that documents "Trump's fraudulent pattern in Atlantic City of making millions for himself while defrauding people of millions that he owed them."
The video, while not featuring Trump's voice once, uses people stiffed by Trump in Atlantic City to make the case that the city "proves" he shouldn't be president.

Go and Pay Your Workers First, Anglican Bishop Tells Okorocha, Rejects His N200,000 Donation

The Anglican Bishop of Owerri, Bishop Cyril C. Okorocha has rejected the N200, ooo donation of Imo State Governor Rochas Okorocha, as gathered by Letstalkng. The Money was given to the Church by the governor at the diocesan synod of the Anglican Communion that was held at St John’s Anglican Church, New Owerri.

While rejecting the money, the Anglican Bishop lambasted Governor Okorocha for inflicting sufferings on the people of Imo State through non-payment of their salaries and his “inhuman policies”.
Represented at the Synod by one Mr. Obinna Aharanwa, Okorrocha said the donation  was to help the church in its development a donation which the Anglican Bishop rejected on basis that the Church will not want to share in the blame for governor’s non-payment of salaries and other financial predicaments which the State is facing at the moment.
Speaking the Bishop said; “Please take your money and return it to the government. If l take this money, lmo people will say that l have collected their pension money and worker’s salary. Go and pay pensioners and workers. I won’t touch this money.
“We want Governor Rochas Okorocha to publish his stewardship and show us what he is doing with lmo money. We need explanations”, Bishop Okorocha concluded.
Meanwhile, the Governor’s representative Mr. Obinna who felt embarrassed by the Bishop’s action went out of the meeting angry.

Woman whose son was expelled from a hostel for advising a student to report a case of sexual molestation gives an update

Mayokun Akpoterabor, the woman who alleged that her son, Medad Akpoterabor, was expelled from his school hostel because he advised a junior female student to report a case of sexual molestation,  gave an update on the matter.

I paid a visit to my son's school this morning in the company of just 3 out of several other concerned friends, fathers, mothers, aunties and uncles, who called and expressed their intention to follow me down here to clarify issues. The 3 are - Dr Dokun Adedeji Mr. Olusola Egberedu and PastorAjayi Keji
We got to speak first with the Director of studies, Mr Solomon Ashiegbu. Even the strong will shudder at his explanation and responses, the weak will simply pass out. I was dangling between the two ends, it took God's grace to stay sane and calm!
He noted that my son Medad Akpoterabor was suspended because they presume he wanted to get the child in question suspended!
Is intention to expel enough reason, or grave-ier than molestation? He said they are equal? Why was the same sanction not meted out to the molester as the intended-advocate-of-expulsion aka Medad? Hear his defence - the molester and molested were given working suspension meaning washing plate and mopping! That to him is equal, even, fair! E gba mi - even the molested girl was punished! Jesu mi!
A lot of things he said will make one almost blank out in amazement. Really this man is a father? A DOS?
Well, it was established - molestation happened, Medad was suspended for advising with the intent to witch-hunt Miss Molester, and tarnish the school's image. That is still his offence.
By when questions came from all directions, the DOS started exonerating himself from some actions. The heat was too much, so he excused himself, put a call to the Proprietress, Mrs Mary Iyayi, who asked the parliament - all of us - to proceed to her office!
On getting to her office, may I note that her disposition was, to be modest, "ok so what?!"
Some 15 minutes into laying the foundation of our visit (not even rolling back to the last 2 hours + of discussion at the DOS office o), she couldn't bear being asked questions and bluntly stood and said she owes the three gentlemen who came with me no explanation! She picked her bag, and made to leave, she wanted to walk out on us!
At that time, the three wonderful men - responsible fathers, mentors, role models and my great friends in need, stood up to her and gave her her match! Verbally ooooo (we are too civil to get into anything more than English grammar nah).
We left her office of course, angry at such effrontery!
We decided to proceed to the next level. A friend Suyi Adebayo had called me early this morning offering to take the matter up pro bono. One or two other legal minds had assured they are just a call away. With that we left.
I had asked Medad to join his mates in school when we got there in the morning, since there was no need of him being at the discussions between adults. If his attention was needed, we will call him, I had instructed him.
I had also sighted him with his Basketball Team when we were migrating from Mr Ashiegbu's office to Mrs Iyayi's, he was happy to be back - his team mates also showed their delight. He told me they will soon leave for the venue of the match between them and Dansol School, just within the neighborhood.
When we left the Proprietress office, I assumed they had left, with the plan to go pick him when he is done, so we all drove out after I thanked the gentlemen greatly.
Not quite 8 minutes after I left, my son called that he was thrown out of the school, on an instruction just left by Mrs Iyayi, that he should not be allowed in!
I drove back like....
Didn't Ashiegbu just repeatedly say the suspension was just from the hostel? Didn't the letter even specify "to leave the hostel"? Mrs Iyayi won't stop at taking any decision just so she proves she can do anything to crush my son?!!!!
I demanded a letter to state they don't want him inside the school, the DOS said it was an omission that should have been included in the suspension letter. Said Mrs Iyayi had verbally instructed Medad not to enter the school two weeks ago? Nah nah nah! Changing narrative within the space of few hours???? The same man that said no one says he shouldn't be in school or participate in any activity? Now this people are messing with my sanity!
In between, the girl that was molested, quickly shared some facts with me, hurriedly gave me her mum's number, and told me things that will get any sane and responsible parent miffed. You will be awed!
Did I mention I have it all recorded?
#IstandWithMedad
Truth will prevail!
To be contd...

HEZEKIAH UNIVERSITY UMUDI

ORIGIN
Hezekiah University was established as a private university in May 2015 under the license of the Federal Government of Nigeria. The idea to start the Hezekiah University was initiated in 2004 after which the initial contact with the National Universities Commission (NUC) was made and the application forms for the establishment of the university were obtained to begin the process of obtaining license for the university. The university is a direct response of the Living Christ Mission Inc. to the crisis of access to university education facing the annual mass of qualified applicants seeking admission into existing Nigerian universities. THE LAGOS-CALABAR RAIL LINK CONTRACT FINALLY SIGNED.

The Federal Government has signed a renegotiated agreement with the China Civil Engineering Construction Company (CCECC) to commence construction of the Lagos-Calabar coastal railway line at a cost of $11.117billion.
The contract was initially valued at $11.917billion when it was initiated by the Goodluck Jonathan administration but has been reviewed downward to $11.117 billion.
The reduction in contract sum is attributed to drop in prices of key materials such as steel among others, said Rotimi Amaechi, minister of transportation while signing the contract on behalf of the Federal Government on Friday in Abuja.
In view of the urgency of the project, he said first segment of the rail line which comprises Calabar,Uyo,Aba, and Port-Harcourt will be ready within two years nothing that the contract signifies the Federal Government’s resolve to pursue aggressive diversification plan for the economy especially as the coastal rail project when completed will link with all sea ports, together with the main western line, thereby creating new business hubs for commercial activities.
“We are today signing contract for the awarding of the Lagos Calabar rail line at the cost of $11.117billion. Initially, that project was to be awarded by the Goodluck Jonathan administration at the cost of $11.917billion,so we have been able to secure a price reduction of $800 million due to negotiations and the fall in price of some commodities in the world market. But it is basically the same contract but at different price. The first segment, Calabar and Port-Harcourt by my expectation will be ready in two years and they are to be linked with all the sea ports”, he said.
While assuring that government will push for timely payment of its counterpart funds to the coastal rail project despite paucity of funds, he stressed that the Abuja-Kaduna is currently being test run for free, adding that plans are underway to procure more coaches to increase carry capacity of commuters and cargo.
Speaking after the signing, Cao Bao Gang, president of CCECC, assured of commitment to execute the project saying nothing that the signing of Lagos Calabar rail line will further enhance Nigeria’s economy, in addition to boosting cheap transportation of commuters and cargo at all times.
Gang who led a team of CCECC management to sign the contract, stressed also that the Chinese company will build factories in Nigeria where it can fabricate materials necessary for servicing the rails, even as he pledged to transfer the technology in the areas of manufacturing, maintenance and other aspects of engineering.
He also promised on behalf of the company to keep to the two years completion period for the first segment of the job.

‘Nigeria Is A Sick Nation, Allow Us Go Peacefully’ – Catholic Archbishop Obinna

Archbishop Obinna, the Roman Catholic bishop of Owerri Archdiocese in a recent interview lent his voice to courageous Christian clergy, speaking against injustice, and the deteriorating peace in Nigeria.
In the explosive interview, granted to The Sun, the outspoken Archbishop spoke on the renewed call for a free Republic of Biafra, restiveness in the Niger Delta, and several other issues affecting the country.
“As far as I am concerned all these unrests in the Niger Delta or in the South East and so on are an indication that Nigeria is a sick nation,” Archbishop Anthony Obinna said.
Archbishop Obinna joined the Igbo Heroes Remembrance Day parade in Nkpor, Onitsha on May 30, 2016. The day marked a devastating massacre of Igbos by Nigerian soldiers. Human rights activists put the death toll at 90 and accuse the Nigerian Army of burying their victims in mass graves in the Army Barracks, Onitsha.
Excerpts from the interview are below:
Some of them complained about unemployment. Look at the state of the nation – everything seems to be in disarray. We have Boko Haram, Niger Delta agitations and the Biafran agitation in the South East. What are you going to advise the Federal Government about these?
As far as I am concerned all these unrests in the Niger Delta or in the South-east and so on are an indication that Nigeria is a sick nation. And the sense of patriotism is not there. I’ll say that is the reason for Biafra or the uprising for Biafra or the uprising for the Niger Delta. That is the reason. If we get Nigeria right and there is a noble sense of patriotism; noble sense of belonging in which every person, every segment of Nigeria counts and feels that it counts, then there won’t be all these agitations. That is why our leaders must go back to the drawing board and ask themselves this question; “Do we really want to be one Nigeria?” Is it the one Nigeria where we’re killing each other; afraid of war all the time and across the board. The leaders need to sit down and make up their minds if they don’t want one Nigeria, then let us separate peacefully. We can be good neigbours.
In a recent interview I had, I must have spoken this wise too. It is wonderful to have one loving, peaceful, patriotic Nigeria. If it’s not going to work out, for goodness sake, let us be honest with ourselves and say we cannot live together because we have too many religious, ethnic interests. I know we can go beyond this if the leaders become patriotic and being less self-centered, using resources to build up industries and factories to absorb the young people who are agitating. That has always been my position and I will continue to say that.
n essence, you’re calling on the different ethnic groups to come together and renegotiate the existence of Nigeria?
We don’t have true federalism as yet, we are still practicing the unitary system of governance with a command structure. So the national confab was an attempt to restructure and redesign Nigeria. This has not been taken seriously. I’m sure that if the 2014 National Conference was taken seriously I’m sure many people have said it’s the solution to Nigeria’s problems. True unity, true federalism in Nigeria has always been canvassed.
All those ethnic nationalities participated in the conference. I mentioned this to General, I mean President Buhari when I visited him with other bishops. I told him that we should chart a now course, let’s make Nigeria more unified. Let’s end all these ethnic, religious differences, let everybody be brought to the table and let’s find the best way to make Nigeria one. Some have suggested turning the six geopolitical zones to a confederal structure. So let’s look for something that can help us live in peace and harmony. Somebody going to the North-east, North-west, North-central etc will feel at home; the same with anyone from the other zones going to any other zone in the country should feel at home.
In 1985 when I came from the United States with the patriotism I had in my heart I decided to tour and know my country. When I was in the United States I tended to know more of Europe and America. So I traveled from the East went through Benue, made it to Niger State and from there I headed down to the South-west up to Lagos etc. In short, I made a round trip of Nigeria. That time I felt a great sense of happiness that I was able to know a little more about Nigeria.
But today, to travel across Nigeria is a nightmare because we don’t trust each other. There are alarming signals of unrest and insecurity and we’re being alerted. The other day, just close to the Cathedral here, talking about Irete, a small town, raised an alarm about an invasion that was coming to them and they didn’t sleep the whole night. And some of them even left town. So these are the kinds of things happening with us.
As somebody put it in the paper recently he said this is like a slow civil war, a low-key civil war that is actually real. We don’t feel happy with the state of the nation and it is kind of worsened with these events that have come as a response to the failure of leaders to lead this nation aright so that there would be a sense of belonging. Once the leaders are alive to their responsibilities you don’t need to meet them personally but you will identify with them. See the effects: the effects have failed economically, politically, religiously, morally and socially. So that’s why I feel this matter should be taken up. We should really take a look at how we’re relating with each other. We’re so much polarized, we’re alienated and the children are not having it easy because they can feel and see the alienation between the North and South, between one ethnic group and the other.
